I-PARC will be hosting a workshop titled “Systems Based Approach: What is it and why is it relevant to physical activity promotion” on the 28th of January 2020 in the Hilton Kilmainham, Dublin. Find more information on each of the speakers below:
Prof. Bauman is a world-leading public health researcher who has studied chronic disease prevention and the development and assessment of prevention research methods. He is co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity. Professor Bauman has worked extensively in the fields of physical activity, obesity, smoking and cardiovascular disease prevention as well as other areas relating to health promotion. He is a leading authority on research relating to the health consequences of physical activity, and an expert in the consequences of prolonged sitting, including as a risk factor for CV disease and diabetes. He is a committed advocate for physical activity and health and has spent much of the last five years developing and implementing methods for research translation and scaling-up interventions to the population level.
Nick is a director of Cavill Associates Ltd, a research associate of the University of Oxford BHF Health Promotion Research Group, and an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Salford. He specialises in the development of policy and programmes on sustainable transport and the links to physical activity.
He is currently a specialist advisor to Public Health England’s Obesity team, and a member of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence Programme Development Group on obesity. He was one of the core team for the WHO Health Economic Assessment Tool (HEAT) for walking and cycling; a member of the Dept of Health’s Physical Activity Editorial Group; and a member of the World Cancer Research Fund policy panel. He has worked at both Departments of Health and Transport, and was formerly at the Health Education Authority, where he was head of the physical activity programme from 1994 – 2000. Nick recently completed his PhD at the University of Salford, focusing on national policy approaches to promoting physical activity, and was made a member of the Faculty of Public Health through distinction.
Dr Andrew Milat is Director, Evidence and Evaluation at the NSW Ministry of Health and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. His PhD focused on implementation science, scale up of health interventions and research impact assessment. Andrew has held positions including the Head of the Knowledge Transfer Division at the Sax Institute, Research Manager with the Australian Government Department of Health and regional Director of Health Promotion. With over 20 years experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of innovative health policies and programs at national, state and local levels he has a unique appreciation of the interface between research, policy and practice.
Flora has worked in the field of physical activity for health for over 20 years. With a background in Sport and Exercise Science and Physical Education, Flora has worked in various operational and strategic physical activity development roles within various Local Authority and Health settings. For the past 15 years Flora has worked at a national level within Scotland’s national health improvement agency, NHS Health Scotland, where she has led and contributed to a number of national physical activity programmes, policies and initiatives, including the establishment of the national Physical Activity and Health Alliance (PAHA), the development of the NHS Physical Activity Pathway, and the review and development of the Scottish Government’s physical activity policy and delivery framework.
