Physical education (PE) and school sports: a creative approach to human rights and democracy

The Secretariat of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport is pleased to announce its upcoming Consultative Committee webinar on Physical education (PE) and school sports: a creative approach to human rights and democracy.

This webinar will take place online on Monday 21 February 2022 from 15:00 to 17:00 (CEST) and will bring together experts in the field of sport, human rights, physical education and school sports.

School sport and Physical Education (PE) are important means to raise future generations in the spirit of the core values promoted by the Council of Europe – Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law. Sport means respecting the rules, providing everyone with an equal chance of taking part. It incorporates the concepts of friendship, fair play, fairness and respectful sporting behaviour.

Participation per se in physical education and school sport does not necessarily facilitate an ethical development in children and youth.

Physical educators and sport coaches need to organize young people’s experiences of games and activities in such a way as to make the ethical dimensions of sport explicit.

The aim of this webinar is to discuss the relevance of school sports and physical education as a tool for promoting human rights and democracy. In addition, the webinar shall discuss how PE teachers and coaches can implement a values-based physical education and sports training approach.

Speakers include representatives and experts from the Council of Europe, national institutions, organised sport and acadamia.
The webinar will be chaired and moderated by Kolë Gjeloshaj, Chair of the EPAS Consultative Committee.
