Research overview

Overview

I-PARC brings together researchers, policy makers and practitioners from physical activity (PA) in order to develop a systematic method for identifying examples of effective PA interventions and effective implementation strategies. This is an adaption of to the National Implementation Research Network’s formula for success “Effective Interventions X Effective Implementation Methods X Enabling Context = Positive Outcomes”.

I-PARC 2.0 is an implementation science project focused on improving how evidence-based physical activity programmes are put into practice in real-world settings across Ireland. Rather than developing new programmes, it works with stakeholders across five Active Cities to identify suitable existing programmes, adapt and tailor them to local contexts, develop strategies to overcome implementation barriers, and create site-specific implementation plans.
Ultimately, the project aims to develop and test a systematic, evidence-informed approach to selecting, adapting and implementing physical activity programmes, while assessing whether this improves outcomes such as acceptability, adoption, reach and sustainability. The learning is intended to support future implementation and scale-up of effective physical activity programmes across Ireland.

The Co-Creation Story

The I-PARC research team works collaboratively with five Local Sports Partnership/Active Cities sites — Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford. I-PARC met with Local Sports Partnerships, which have responsibility for supporting participation in sport and physical activity in Ireland, and presented the proposed collaboration. Five sites pursuing Active Cities status agreed to work with I-PARC.
