Sport Ireland Active Cities

In 2018 the WHO developed a Global Action Plan for Physical Activity (GAPPA) which provides a shared vision of more active people for a healthier world and sets goals to achieve a 10% decreased in physical inactivity by 2025 and 15% by 2030. It has four objectives and key policies within each action area: 1. Active Societies, 2. Active Environments, 3. Active People, 4. Active Systems.

The Sport Ireland Active Cities concept is built on the principals of the GAPPA, funded by Sport Ireland through the Dormant Accounts Fund. A Sport Ireland Active City will strive to create social norms about the benefits of sport and physical activity, create programmes and opportunities for its citizens regardless of ability or age, work in a partnership to increase physical activity and decrease inactivity and create/maintain environments where sport and physical activity can happen, ultimately working toward healthier lifestyles of their citizens. Sport Ireland Active Cities must target people who are economically, socially or educationally disadvantaged or who have a disability.

The Limerick Sports Partnership are advertising two posts, deadline to apply is the 5th of July.

  1. Active City Officer – Full Time fixed term contract 2-3 years (35h/week) – Mid level

The Active City Officer will be responsible for the development, delivery and coordination a programme of work that leads to an increase in participation in sport, physical activity, and active lifestyles across all communities in Limerick, with a particular focus on people who are economically or socially disadvantaged, educationally disadvantaged or who have a disability.

This will involve creating effective partnerships with a wide range of agencies and community organisations and maximising access to and use of resources, both financial and human.

The Active City Officer will be a member of the Limerick LSP team and will need to develop a strong working relationship with relevant staff in Limerick City and County Council and other local agencies, local sports clubs and community/voluntary groups and relevant staff and officers from National Governing Bodies. The Active City Officer will also work closely with the national network of Active City Officers, The National Active Cities Lead and Sport Ireland.

  1. National Officer- Active Cities – Full time fixed term contract 2-3 years (35h/week) – Senior level

The National Officer – Active Cities will manage the Active Cities programme and will be responsible for the development, delivery, and coordination a programme of work that leads to an increase in participation in sport, physical activity, and active lifestyles across all communities, with a particular focus on people who are economically or socially disadvantaged, educationally disadvantaged or who have a disability. The National Officer will have a key role in leading, liaising with, coordinating and supporting the local Active City Officers based nationally. The National officer will engage with key external stakeholders including County Councils and other local agencies, local sports clubs and community/voluntary groups and relevant staff and officers from National Governing Bodies and Sport Ireland. The National officer will also foster relationships internally within the Sports Partnership network and work to ensure there is effective ‘effective inter-LSP collaboration and representation’.
